Bisphosphonates and Osteonecrosis

Bisphosphonates are medications commonly used to treat primary and metastatic bone cancer, as well as osteoporosis. A 47-year-old woman undergoing breast cancer treatment for 15 years, with bone metastasis diagnosed 5 years prior, was currently taking zoledronic acid (Zometa, Novartis), 4  mg, once monthly, and with a fractured tooth 15. An atraumatic extraction of teeth with immediate implant installation (Replace Select® 4.3 × 13 mm Nobel Biocare) was performed. After 2 years, the patient complained of pain, and there was remarkable bone loss around the tissues.
