Effects of oral supplementation with nitrate-rich beetroot juice in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension – results from BEET-PAH an exploratory randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare, progressive, symptomatic, and ultimately fatal disease associated with a progressive elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure and the pulmonary vascular resistance resulting in right heart failure (1). Endothelial dysfunction, a pathological feature of PAH, is attributed to the imbalance between endogenous pulmonary vasodilators and vasoconstrictors, in particular nitric oxide (NO), prostacyclin and endothelin-1 (2, 3).
