Characteristics and Outcomes of Ptyalism Gravidarum.

CONCLUSIONS: Although PG represents an unpleasant mental and physical condition, it does not pose any specific risk to the health of the mother or increase adverse perinatal outcomes for the fetus. Alternative medicine could play a role in the treatment of PG. PMID: 30221872 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Konstanty-Kurkiewicz V, Dzięciołowska-Baran E, Szczurowski J, Gawlikowska-Sroka A Abstract Snoring during pregnancy increases the risk of low Apgar score and low birth weight of newborns. Snoring women are twice as likely to be diagnosed as having preeclampsia when compared to non-snoring ones. Snoring may also be linked to, albeit it is not a prerequisite for, apneic events at sleep. The aim of this survey-type study was to evaluate the occurrence and severity of nocturnal respiratory complaints in a group of 312 pregnant women. Problems associated with snoring and other nasopharyngeal symptoms were rep...

n Restless legs syndrome is a relatively common neurologic disorder considerably more prevalent in women than in men. It is characterized by an inactivity-induced, mostly nocturnal, uncomfortable sensation in the legs and an urge to move them to make the disagreeable sensation disappear. Some known genes contribute to this disorder and the same genes contribute to an overlapping condition—periodic leg movements that occur during sleep and result in insomnia. Dopamine and glutamate transmission in the central nervous system are involved in the pathophysiology, and an iron deficiency has been shown in region-sp...

Authors: Akbas M, Koyuncu FM, Bülbül Y, Artunc-Ulkumen B, Çetin A Abstract Purpose: Prenatal anxiety has negative effects on pregnancy and neonate. Both screening tests and invasive diagnostic tests are associated with elevated anxiety level. But a normal fetal karyotype result could improve the anxiety level in high-risk patients. We hypothesized that patients who prefer follow-up without karyotyping may experience increased anxiety and sleep impairment until delivery. Our aim was to determine the effect of invasive diagnostic test decision on anxiety and sleep quality in women with a positive scr...

Prior studies of sleep duration and glycemic control in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) demonstrate correlation between short sleep duration and worsened glycemic control. However, studies on improving sleep knowledge and quality in pregnancy and whether such interventions improve pregnancy outcomes are limited. We developed a novel sleep education program specific to pregnancy and women with GDM and aimed to determine feasibility of implementing this intervention in a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) has been identified as a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. We sought to compare hemodynamic parameters in obese women diagnosed with and without sleep-disordered breathing.
