Carotid Artery Tortuosity Index Is Associated With the Need for Early Aortic Root Replacement in Patients With Loeys-Dietz Syndrome

This study aimed to determine if carotid arterial tortuosity represents a marker of disease severity in Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS). Methods Fifty-four 54 LDS patients (mean age, 17.0 years) who underwent computed tomogram angiography from January 2004 to December 2013 were retrospectively identified. Carotid artery tortuosity index (CATI) was calculated from computed tomogram angiography. Clinical variables were obtained from the medical records. Relationship between CATI and need for aortic root replacement was evaluated with Cox proportional hazard model and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results Higher CATI was associated with the need for aortic root replacement (P

Abstract Background: A sizeable proportion of patients have discordant low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C). Objectives: We assessed the relationship between discordance of LDL-C and non-HDL-C and coronary artery disease (CAD) severity. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the data of 574 consecutive patients who underwent coronary angiography. Fasting serum lipid profiles were recorded, SYNTAX and Gensini scores were calculated to establish CAD complexity and severity. We determined the medians for LDL-C and non-HDL-C to examine the discordance between LDL-C...

AbstractPercutaneous transluminal septal myocardial ablation (PTSMA) has become a significant treatment for symptomatic patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) despite maximal medical therapy. The target septal arteries usually arise from the left anterior descending artery (LAD). However, when septal perforators do not originate from the LAD, non-LAD septal perforators should be included as candidate-target septal branches that feed the hypertrophic septal myocardium, causing left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. Data pertaining to the procedure remain limited. We aimed to investigate PTS...

AbstractDecreased blood perfusion at the anastomotic site increases the risk of anastomotic leakage (AL) following colorectal surgery. Indocyanine green near-infrared fluoroangiography (NIRF/ICG) is a technique that allows for the assessment of intestinal perfusion before and after the formation of an anastomosis. We aimed to compare the rate of AL after colorectal surgery conducted with NIRF/ICG assessing vascular anastomotic perfusion and without this support. The data of patients who underwent colorectal surgery from November 2014 to February 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Left-sided hemicolectomy, sigmoid resectio...

We describe the case of a 39-year-old male, who presented to our emergency department after a one-day history of headache and vomiting, with associated sudden onset posterior neck pain and cerebellar signs following a massage. Computed tomography angiogram and brain demonstrated bilateral vertebral artery dissection and cerebellar stroke. He was admitted to hospital for monitoring and conservative management with antiplatelet therapy, resulting in a good outcome. This is the first reported case of bilateral vertebral artery dissection and stroke to be associated with massage. This case also suggests, unlike many reports in...
