Perseverance and Persistence: The FIDO Philosophy

NURSING IS ONE OF THE MOST rewarding and challenging careers. Whether accompanying Florence Nightingale to Scutari or working in our fast-paced units of today, perseverance and persistence enable nurses to continue providing competent and compassionate care. Perseverance, as described in the Oxford English Dictionary, is “persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delays in success.”1 This is seen in our presence at the bedside—providing quiet reassurance that surgery is over, while monitoring closely for the smallest change and assuring a positive patient outcome.
