Transcranial and Systemic Photobiomodulation for Major Depressive Disorder: A Systematic Review of Efficacy, Tolerability and Biological Mechanisms.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent condition affecting 16.2% of the US population at some point in life (Kessler  et al., 2003). The disorder is also responsible for a significant burden, representing the second leading cause of years lived with disability (YLDs) in the world (Ferrari et al., 2013). Current standard treatments for MDD are medications and psychotherapy (Olfson et al., 2016). However, up t o one third of the patients do not achieve remission after several adequate antidepressant trials (Rush et al., 2009).
