Using the injury severity score to adjust for comorbid trauma may be double counting burns: implications for burn research

Historically, the probability of death from thermal injuries has been determined based on three simple clinical criteria [1 –3]: (1) age (e.g.>60years), (2) burn size (>40% total body surface area [TBSA] burned), and (3) inhalation injury [1].
