Authors: Garla VV, Kanduri S, Yanes-Cardozo L, Lien LF Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are two chronic diseases whose prevalence and co-prevalence are on the rise. CKD is also the most debilitating and expensive complication of DM while management of DM in CKD is most challenging. CKD is developing in much younger patients with DM, and its presentation is also changing. Various methods of glycemic assessment are affected by CKD and dosage of DM medications needs to be adjusted according to the kidney function. One of the significant barriers to glycemic control in DM patients with C...

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To report the spectrum of ethambutol induced optic neuropathy in a group of renal patients with tuberculosis and the role of visual evoked response (VER) in evaluating this disorder. METHODS: Twenty-three renal patients who were started on ethambutol as a part of anti-tubercular treatment for tuberculosis in India, were divided into 4 groups based on glomerular filtration rate (GFR): group 1-chronic kidney disease (CKD) with GFR 30 ≤ 60 mL/min; and group 4-GFR> 60

ConclusionsThese two observations suggest that voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) should be carefully considered in newborns with severe uropathy, particularly in the case of renal insufficiency. If indicated, thyroid function should be monitored in the following weeks, and in case of hypothyroidism treatment should be started.

This study investigated the impact of body composition in the arterial stiffness of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD).MethodsFat mass (FM), fat tissue index (FTI), fat-free mass (FFM), fat-free tissue index (FFTI), and FFTI/FTI were measured in 26 patients and 25 healthy controls by bio-impedance analysis. Data on patient ’s body mass index (BMI) for height-age, serum albumin, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), blood pressure status, and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were collected in patients.ResultsPatients presented lower levels of FM and FFM compared to healthy controls (p = 0.04 andp =&t...

AbstractBackgroundSpina bifida (SB) patients are at increased risk for hydronephrosis, bladder storage and emptying problems, and renal failure that may require multiple bladder surgeries.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed patients born with SB 2005 –2009, presenting to our institution within 1 year of birth. Outcomes at 8–11 years old included final renal/bladder ultrasound (RBUS) results, clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) use, anticholinergic use, surgical interventions, and final renal function. We excluded those without follow- up past age 8 and/or no RBUS or fluoroscopic urodynamic images ...

Redemption of Medtronic’s renal denervation program to treat hypertension is seemingly on the horizon. The Dublin-based company reported results from an investigator-led study and a registry that demonstrate long-term results of RDN’s impact on uncontrolled hypertension. These results were presented during a Late-Breaking Clinical Trial session at EuroPCR in Paris. In the investigator -led study data indicated RDN with the Medtronic Symplicity system was associated with reduced occurrence of subclinical Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) in a small subset of high-risk patients with hypertensive ...
