Radiation Safety Perceptions and Practices Among Pediatric Anesthesiologists: A Survey of the Physician Membership of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia.

Radiation Safety Perceptions and Practices Among Pediatric Anesthesiologists: A Survey of the Physician Membership of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia. Anesth Analg. 2018 Sep 06;: Authors: Whitney GM, Thomas JJ, Austin TM, Fanfan J, Yaster M Abstract BACKGROUND: Pediatric anesthesiologists are exposed to ionizing radiation from x-rays on an almost daily basis. Our goal was to determine the culture of safety in which they work and how they adhere to preventative strategies that minimize exposure risk in their daily practice. METHODS: After Institutional Review Board waiver and approval of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia's research and quality and safety committees, an electronic e-mail questionnaire was sent to the Society's physician, nontrainee members and consisted of questions specific to provider use of protective lead shielding, the routine use of dosimeters, and demographic information. Univariate analyses were performed using the Wilcoxon rank sum test for ordinal variables, the Fisher exact test for categorical variables, and the Spearman test to analyze correlation between 2 ordinal variables, while a proportional odds logistic regression was used for a multivariable ordinal outcome analysis. P values of

We evaluated whether HPV type restriction and more stringent cutoffs on Xpert HPV optimise performance characteristics of this assay f...

In conclusion, our diagnostic prediction model uses easily obtainable information to identify children at increased risk of high blood pressure, offering an opportunity for targeted screening. This model enables to detect a higher proportion of children with high blood pressure than a strategy based on child overweight only.

Authors: Yang L, Li M, Liu X, Wu M, Zhang J, Zhao L, Ding G, Yang X Abstract BACKGROUND: Remarkable achievements have been made for over two decades by implementing a universal salt iodization policy in China. However, changes in the standards and manufacturing of iodized salt have made it necessary to regularly monitor iodine intake and thyroid function in the population. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate iodine nutritional status using thyroid function and urinary iodine levels in pregnant women via a national survey. METHODS: Participants included pregnant women enrolled in the 2015 National Nutrition and Heal...

Conclusions deriving from these studies, for example that prevention is cost saving, need to be carefully interpreted as they rely on many assumptions. PMID: 31964247 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Researchers at the Laboratory of Bionanophotonic Systems (BIOS) at EPFL's School of Engineering have developed an optical biosensor that slashes the sepsis diagnosis time from several days to just a few minutes. Their approach draws on recent developments in nanotechnology and on light effects at a nanoscale to create a highly portable, easy-to-use device that can rapidly detect sepsis biomarkers in a patient's bloodstream. And their device takes just a few minutes to deliver a result, like a pregnancy test. Because the biosensor uses a plasmonics technology, it can be built from small, inexpensive components, yet it can a...

Authors: Johansen SL, Stenhaug BA, Robakis TK, Williams KE, Cullen MR Abstract OBJECTIVE: To compare risk for postpartum depression across prior psychiatric diagnoses. METHODS: The deidentified Optum© Clinformatics Data Mart of national commercial insurance claims was used to identify 1,166,577 women of reproductive age with first-observed incidence of pregnancy across all 50 United States from 2003 to 2016. Women with insurance coverage for at least 6 months prior to conception and following delivery were eligible (n = 336,522). Psychiatric diagnoses prior to pregnancy were identified by ICD-9-CM and ICD-...

This study aimed to decipher the lipidomics pathways involved in pathophysiology of sPTB.MethodsBlood samples were taken from SCreening fOr Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE), an international study that recruited 5628 nulliparous women, with a singleton low-risk pregnancy. Our analysis focused on plasma from SCOPE in Cork. Discovery profiling of the samples was undertaken using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry Lipidomics, and features significantly altered between sPTB (n  = 16) and Control (n = 32) groups were identified using empirical Bayes testing, adjusting for multiple comparisons.Results...

DiscussionMainly in the early first trimester, larger placental volumetric parameters are associated with lower pressure and more FMVD in the fetoplacental vasculature after delivery. This may suggest that larger and/or more vascularized placentas in early pregnancy have better adaptive mechanisms and possibly lead to better pregnancy outcomes.
