Seven Injured in Knife Attack in Paris

PARIS (AP) — French authorities have opened an investigation on suspicion of attempted murder after a man injured seven people in a knife attack in central Paris late Sunday, a judicial official said Monday. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to discuss publicly an ongoing investigation, said the attacker was believed to be an Afghan national. He said that terrorist motives were not suspected at this stage of the investigation. Paris police said four of the victims were in serious condition, including one in life-threatening condition. Police didn't provide information about the identities of the victims, but said they included two British tourists. The attacker was also injured. He was unconscious when he was arrested and taken to hospital. Paris police said the man was armed with a knife and a metal bar, and first attacked four people outside a cinema in the 19th district of Paris. The surroundings of the cinema, on the banks of a canal, are crowded on summer evenings with Parisians and tourists practicing leisure activities including games of boules, also known as petanque. A witness at the scene hit the attacker with a petanque ball, police said. The attacker then fled into a nearby street where he injured three other people. He was later overpowered and disarmed by other witnesses at the scene, police said. All contents © copyright 2018 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
