Conclusion: This study supports extending the utility of HHE in children for screening of CHD in addition to its current role in rheumatic heart disease screening.

EvansAbstractThe ketone bodies, d-β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate, are soluble 4-carbon compounds derived principally from fatty acids, that can be metabolised by many oxidative tissues, including heart, in carbohydrate-depleted conditions as glucose-sparing energy substrates. They also have important signalling functions, acting through G-protein coupled receptors and histone deacetylases to regulate metabolism and gene expression including ...

Authors: Zhou H, Wu X, Zeng L, Yan X, Tian W, Xiong K, Huang J Abstract In the past 10 years, clinical biobanks have experienced increasing expansion in China. Demand for systematically educated biobanking professionals is a priority for Chinese biobanks' agenda. The cryobiology and biobankology course is the first semester-long course in China, designed and developed at Central South University with international cooperation. Leading professors were from China, the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada to teach the latest version of biobanking knowledge and skills around the globe. This course is a comprehensi...

However, these guidelines are for patients living in high income countries. Separate guidelines, applicable to Indian children, are required when recommending an intervention for congenital he...

AbstractThe frequency of newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) is approximately 1% in the general population; however, the recurrence rate of CHD in mothers with CHD differs in ethnicity and reports. We therefore aimed to determine the prevalence of CHD among neonates born to mothers with CHD in our institute in Japan. We reviewed the medical charts of 803 neonates delivered by 529 women with CHD at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center from 1982 to 2016. They included isolated ventricular septal defect (VSD,31.4%), isolated atrial septal defect (ASD, 23.3%), tetralogy of Fallot (TOF,10.6%). We defined CHD...

CONCLUSIONS: An increase of mild CHD was observed during the period analysed. This could have been influenced by improvements in diagnostic techniques, extended use of echocardiography, and the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, clinical modification coding system, and to a decrease in very severe CHD, which is less influenced by external factors. Significant geographical differences were found in the incidence of severe and very severe CHD. PMID: 29605620 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

This study evaluated the safety and acute haemodynamic effects of inhaled iloprost in children with PAH associated with congenital heart disease (CHD). Children with PAH –CHD who underwent cardiac catheterization and iloprost administration in our catheter laboratory between June 2007 and October 2015 were included. Iloprost was administered by atomization inhalation and changes in hemodynamic parameters were recorded. In total, 100 children with PAH–CHD were en rolled. Median age was 13 [1.5–18.0] years and 34% were male. A ventricular septal defect was present in 84%, a patent duct in 12%, a complete at...

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities. The incidence of DS at birth in developed countries has remained relatively stable over the last 20 years, at approximately 1 per 1000 live births. DS is associated with a number of congenital defects and is also at increased risk of conditions that may develop later in life, and thus requires multidisciplinary care and close surveillance. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is present in 35%–50% of patients and is haemodynamically significant in two-thirds.1 Early diagnosis and treatment in expert centres are essential for improving short-term a...

CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed that the profile and type of CHD in DS in the Moroccan setting exhibited slight differences in the distribution of these CHDs compared with European neighbours and other Western countries. Further studies are needed to determine which variables have an impact on these differences. PMID: 27805241 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSION: The frequency of CHD in our DS cohort is comparable with Europe, Asia ,and other KSA regions. However its pattern appears to be different from some areas in KSA. PMID: 27381537 [PubMed - in process]
