AbstractThe use of cocaine constitutes a major health problem. Cocaine use is associated with acute and chronic complications that might involve any system, the most common being the cardiovascular system. The precise incidence of cocaine-induced cardiomyopathy remains mysterious and probably underreported. Cocaine use should be considered in young patients presenting with chest pain or heart failure without other underlying risk factors. Cocaine-related cardiovascular complications can be acute or chronic and include ischemic and non-ischemic events. Frequent cocaine users have a seven-fold higher risk of myocardial infar...

Functional abdominal pain is commonly related to visceral hypersensitivity (VH) and recent studies have shown success in management of such patients with Amitriptyline. A subgroup of patients with chronic RUQ pain post cholecystectomy routinely fail medical management and are referred for evaluation of Sphincter of Oddi (SOD) dysfunction/papillary stenosis. The association of RUQ pain, dilated common bile duct (CBD) and elevated liver function tests (LFT ’s) is strongly suggestive of papillary stenosis as it has been shown to benefit the most from biliary sphincterotomy.

Over the past decade, increased awareness by the medical profession of the devastating consequences of opioid addiction has resulted in substantial efforts to limit the number of opioid prescriptions for both perioperative pain management and chronic pain. While these efforts have had some success, opioid misuse remains a crisis, which we in the orthopaedic community have a particular opportunity to address. It is the belief of the undersigned that progress depends on improved research methods and reporting to further the understanding of pain experience and response to management, with the end goal of identifying more eff...

The endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) fine needle aspiration (FNA) technique has been refined improving tissue acquisition and allowing targeted analgesic injection. During the last years, new research and guidelines advocate for conservative management of low risk pancreatic cysts. Simultaneously, an increasing number of reports have shown the limitations of celiac plexus block and neurolysis to treat chronic abdominal pain. We aims to describe changes in EUS practice over a decade.
