Raising the Bar: Developing Best Practice Guidelines for Breast Radiation Therapy Imaging

The use of imaging to verify radiation treatment is an essential part of accurate treatment delivery. Imaging technologies have rapidly improved however, in the absence of governing provincial standards, local practices and protocols have not kept pace. During breast radiation treatment, Inconsistencies in image evaluation and in the selection of the appropriate corrective strategy was observed to increase work load and create inefficiencies on the treatment unit. Furthermore patients could remain on the treatment couch for an extended time, causing anxiety and discomfort which in turn could lead to patient movement.
