Non-Medical Consultancy: A Local Experience

The non-medical consultant role was first announced in 1999. Despite a high uptake by the nursing profession, other allied health professionals have been slow to embrace the role. Radiography is characteristic of this trend, with just 83 consultants registered with the SCoR in the first ten years. Failure to recruit to two radiologist posts in 2016, led a small NHS Trust in the North of England to explore the feasibility of a consultant radiographer post. The post was successfully appointed in 2017 and has been viewed both locally and nationally as a success.
