Invited Perspective on Diniz BS. The molecular intersection between senescence and major depression in the elderly.

Biological aging is a matter of constant research and debate, especially the boundaries between normal or pathological aging. Also, clinical psychiatrists, neurologists, and geriatricians are frequently posed with the question of whether late-life depression (LLD) is clinically and neurobiologically different from early-onset depression. The differential diagnosis and comorbidity between LLD, dementia, and frailty are challenging in our daily clinical practice and research settings (1). These are complex and multifactorial conditions, and there is a need for the development of more specific approaches that allow clinicians to differentiate each of them.
