Stripling friends, four decades past,School and team mates, play companions,Imagined arms entwined again,Conjured hither, rise! With rebornJoyous hopes and boyish loves, nowThink about what might have been.Why did I survive, successful,Writing down this lamentation,You now ruined, lost, deceased —You, with melted mind, now mad;You, by greed laid low, in prison;You, by tumor, untimely dead?Fortune dealt a parlous hand, andJustice cruelly cut the cards,Making jokers of us all.Better not to see our future,Back when we were young and full ofDreams the years would soon destroy.
