Objective Colorimetric Evaluation of Aging-related Articular Cartilage Degeneration.

CONCLUSIONS: This study developed an original colorimetric device with high validity. Browning of articular cartilage increased with age, but this study did not detect pentosidine-caused browning. Further study is needed to clarify the factors associated with browning of cartilage. PMID: 30135342 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Cao P, Li Y, Tang Y, Ding C, Hunter DJ Abstract Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of pain, loss of function and disability in the elderly, with the knee being the most impactful joint affected. Currently, there is still no 'cure' in OA treatment.Areas covered: The authors review the current and emerging therapies for knee OA including traditional OA medications (oral and topical NSAIDs, acetaminophen, and opioids) and emerging treatments including disease-modifying OA drugs. The failures of agents that have been through clinical trials are also summarized. Furthermore, the authors prov...

NIDCR Grand Rounds The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint and the only bilateral joints that must function together as one unit to support mastication and speech. TMJ trauma and diseases, such as osteoarthritis, can be debilitating and severely reduce quality of life. Current TMJ treatments generally involve either pain management or invasive surgeries, such as total joint replacement surgery. There are no minimally invasive, regenerative TMJ therapies. Dr. Embree and her lab have identified TMJ-specific fibrocartilage stem cells that self-organize and regenerate cartilage, fat, and vascularized bone. She has...

This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index Short Form (WOMAC-SF) for the assessment of musculoskeletal disorders. We evaluated whether WOMAC-SF correlated with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 12 (WHODAS-12) and Kaigo-Yobo questionnaires for assessing health-outcomes in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Namgaram-2 cohort. WOMAC, WOMAC-SF, WHODAS-12, and Kaigo-Yobo questionnaires were administered to patients with musculoskeletal disorders, including radiology-confirmed knee osteoarthrit...

ConclusionIndividuals did not report an increase in knee pain, stiffness or disability in their ACL ‐deficient knee. Only disability was associated with worsening severity of radiographic OA in ACL‐deficient knees.

ObjectiveTo identify long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with the inflammatory phenotype of synovial fibroblasts from obese patients with osteoarthritis (OA), and to explore the expression and function of these lncRNAs.MethodsSynovium was collected from normal ‐weight patients with hip fracture (non‐OA; n = 6) and from normal‐weight (n = 8) and obese (n = 8) patients with hip OA. Expression of RNA was determined by RNA‐sequencing and quantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. Knockdown of lncRNA was performed using LNA‐based GapmeRs. Synovial fibroblast cytokine production was measur...

ConclusionsIn contrast to the well ‐established association between black race and knee or hip OA, odds of hand OA are lower in black versus nonblack subjects, which is not mediated by known hand OA risk factors. Future mechanistic works are warranted to determine the mediating protective factors for hand OA among the black subject s.
