Interleukin-21 (IL-21), a cytokine produced by many subsets of activated immune cells, is critical for driving inflammation in several models. Using Helicobacter pylori infection as a model for chronic mucosal infection, we previously published that IL-21 is required for the development of gastritis in response to infection. Concomitant with protection from chronic inflammation, H. pylori-infected IL-21–/– mice exhibited limited Th1 and Th17 responses in their gastric mucosa. Here we report that H. pylori-infected IL-21–/– mice express significantly higher levels of IL-17A than H. pylori-infected wi...

ConclusionAlteration in the cell cycle by means of different mechanisms such as inflammation, alteration in cell signaling, invasion and immune evasion, specific niche colonization, induction of DNA damage and mutation, expression of some microRNAs, and enhancing epigenetic effects are the most common mechanisms employed by bacterial species.

This article take attention to treatment approaches using nanoparticles as an alternative to H.Pylori treatment to cope with increased antibiotic resistance. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the current limitations and new promising altenatives in treatment of H.Pylori, to highlight the location of nanotechnology to overcome treatment failures, and to emphasize the advantages of using membrane-coated nanoparticles for the first time. Expert opinion: Because of the current problems in the treatment of H.Pylori, there is increasing interest in alternative approaches including nanotechnology. The strong...

AbstractBackgroundIncidence of gastric cancer (GC) shows different distribution in Italy, with higher incidence in the north and center. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients resected at the Hospital of Cremona between January 2007 and December 2016. Available clinical variables were linked with survival to identify possible prognostic factors.Materials and methodsVariables analyzed were age, sex, type of surgery, site, histology, invasion, nodal status, resection margins, grade, HER2 status,Helicobacter pylori infection (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ra...

In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus strains upon coincubation of host macrophages with H. pylori. We found that Lactobacillus gasseri Kx110A1 (L. gas), a strain isolated from a human stomach, but not other tested Lactobacillus species, blocked the production of the proinflammatory cytokines TNF and IL-6 in H. pylori-infected macrophages. Interestingly, L. gas also inhibited the release of these cytokines in LPS or LTA stimulated macrophages, demonstrating a general anti-inflammatory property. The inhibition of these cytokines did not occur through the polarization of macrophages fr...

CONCLUSION: The authors hypothesize that observed risk factors associated to gastric cancer might be lesser synergistic than is usually expected.RESUMO CONTEXTO: É amplamente assumido que gênero, idade, gastrite e Helicobacter pylori , todos têm algum grau de correlação e, portanto, podem sinergicamente levar ao desenvolvimento de câncer gástrico. OBJETIVO: Neste estudo transversal, esperamos observar a correlação acima mencionada na análise de pr ontuários de 67 pacientes de ambos os sexos (sexo feminino, n=44), média de idade ± desvio...

ZBTB20 promotes cell migration and invasion of gastric cancer by inhibiting IκBα to induce NF-κB activation. Artif Cells Nanomed Biotechnol. 2019 Dec;47(1):3862-3872 Authors: Zhang Y, Zhou X, Zhang M, Cheng L, Zhang Y, Wang X Abstract Zinc finger and BTB domain containing 20 (ZBTB20), a sequence-specific transcriptional repressor, has been found to be involved in tumorigenesis. However, its role(s) in gastric cancer and the molecular mechanisms involved are poorly investigated. Here, our data demonstrated that ZBTB20 expression was markedly upregulated in gastric cancer cell lines inf...

CONCLUSIONS: The 14-day high dose PPI- bismuth-containing quadruple therapy with probiotic can provide an excellent cure rate forH. pylori infection as first line treatment irrespective of CYP2C19 and antibiotic resistance pattern. Adding probioticalso significantly reduced treatment-related adverse events and improve the patients' compliance. PMID: 31554388 [PubMed - in process]

[The Conversation Africa] The spread of Helicobacter Pylori (H.pylori) has been flagged as a public health concern in Nairobi due to poor urban sanitation and access to clean water. It's a concern because it's contagious, is present in the city's water systems and is hard to treat. If left untreated, it can cause inflammation and even cancer. Kimang'a Nyerere explains what H.pylori is and what needs to be done to better manage infection rates.
