Assessment of Change in Restless Legs Syndrome Symptoms during the Acute Drug-withdrawal Period

The standard treatment of restless legs syndrome (RLS) with dopaminergic (DA) agents is complicated by the eventual development of augmentation and the need for alternative therapy [1-6]. Part of the treatment for subjects augmented on DA agents is to taper down and off of the DA agent [6]. Clinical reports during the first several days off the DA agents indicate patients may experience severe sleep loss with worsening of RLS symptoms. This experience may result in the failure to get off the medication [7].
