Postoperative Outcomes based on Patient Participation in a Pre-surgery Education and Weight Management Program

The prevalence of obesity in the United States has steadily increased over the past five decades, with approximately 35% of adults classified as obese (Body Mass Index [BMI]> 30 kg/m2) and 6.3% with Class III or severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2)(1,2). One of the most successful treatment option for severe obesity is bariatric surgery, wherein the majority of patients experience a 50-75% reduction in excess weight within six months of surgery(3). However, weight recidivism may occur approximately two years post-surgery(4) and i s often attributed to reduced motivation,(5) re-emergence of unhealthy behaviors(6), stress(7), and limited social support(8).
