Joint Action Needed to Reform our Food System

Come 2030, we will not have healthy and affordable food if we continue with business as usual. But no one institution can single handedly change the course of our food system. The key to ensuring a sustainable food system is involving a diverse group of actors – from smallholder farmers to government – to generate ideas for change, together. Save our coffeeLook at the coffee sector. Everybody loves their cup of coffee, but will we still be able to drink it in the future? Our recently launched 2018 Coffee Barometer, which measures the sector’s sustainability, finds that coffee has a global retail value of USD 200 billion, but less than 10 percent of it stays in producing countries. In this study, we attempted to achieve efficient synthesis of (S)-form 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylbutanoic acid (HMMBA) from 2-ethyl-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (EMPD) using an enzymatic approach. Agromyces sp. E2 was found to produce HMMBA from soil samples through enrichment culture using EMPD as a carbon source. The microbial asymmetric oxidation was characterized, and the highest activity was observed following addition of 0.2% (w/v) 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol in the culture as an inducer. In this study we utilize two prototypic quinoxalinedione antagonists, namely DNQX and CNQX, which quench the intrinsic fluorescence of the ligand binding domain (LBD), to perform in vitro binding assays. We find that binding of DNQX and CNQX at the AMPA receptor GluA2 LBD is strongly pH dependent, whereas glutamate binding is not affected by pH.
