Secondary Neutron Dose from a Dynamic Collimation System During Intracranial Pencil Beam Scanning Proton Therapy: A Monte Carlo Investigation

This study presents a unique application of Monte Carlo methods to study secondary neutron generation and dose equivalence distributions resulting from single field uniform dose and intensity modulated proton therapy treatments using a Dynamic Collimation System. Expected neutron doses are compared to aperture-collimated proton therapy techniques. The excess relative risk from an intracranial treatment plan ’s neutron dose distribution is compared against that of a traditional uncollimated intracranial proton therapy treatment using a graphite range shifter.
