Affective instability in those with and without mental disorders: a case control study

Affective Instability (AI) is a transdiagnostic symptom (Broome et  al., 2015b; Henry et al., 2001b). It has been defined as rapid oscillations of intense affect, with difficulty regulating these or their behavioural consequences (Marwaha, 2013). Multiple strands of evidence have associated AI with suicidal thinking (Palmier-Claus et al., 2012; Yen et al., 2004 ), health service use (Marwaha et al., 2013c), new onset of depression (Marwaha et al., 2015), psychotic symptoms (Marwaha et al., 2013a), onset of bipolar disorder and increasing time to recovery (Howes et al., 2011; Stange et al., 2016).
