The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Iranian patients with schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Iranian patients with schizophrenia. Five national articles were collected without time limit in the present systematic review and meta-analysis. Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus databases were used to search for the target articles. Search for articles was done using the keywords “Schizophrenia”, “metabolic syndrome”, “MetSyn” and “X syndrome”, and their combinations. Data were analyzed using the meta-analysis method and the random effects model. The heterogeneity between the studies was evaluated using I2 index and the data were analyzed using STATA version 12. Analysis of five selected articles with a sample size of 1589 people showed that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia was 24% (95% CI: 15–33). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women and men was 34% (95% C: 19–49) and 11.5% (95% CI: 3–19), respectively.
