Comparative incidence and excess risk of acute kidney injury in hospitalized patients receiving vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam in combination or as monotherapy

Vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam are among the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in U.S. Hospitals [1, 2]. This particular combination of antibiotics may be useful empirically due to the broad Gram-positive activity of vancomycin (i.e. activity against methicillin-resistant S. aureus) and the broad Gram-negative activity of piperacillin-tazobactam (i.e. activity against P. aeruginosa). Given the widespread use of these antibiotics, there is a need for an enhanced understanding of the safety of these two agents in combination or as monotherapy.
