Three problems with the debate around screen time
The cycle of moral panic around screen time and technology use feels endless. Here are three issues we need to address before we can move the debate onThe debate about children and technology has increasingly captured public interest over the past year, and has been raging for many more. As with anything of this nature, the public conversations about screen time have gradually become more heated and divisive. And in turn, it increasingly feels as though scientific evidence has become a casualty in the process.Just this week for example, we have seen the resurgence of scaremongering stories claiming that social media is leaving children “unable to communicate with each other ”. Such claims are pushed into the spotlight in the complete absence of anything that vaguely resembles supporting evidence. The academic teams working on providing the science to inform this debate are most often overlooked. This is not surprising as science itself does not have keen PR teams or spare time to contact editors to correct flawed press coverage. In this study, the peel, pulp, and seeds of Vitis labrusca L. grapes were characterized by LC-DAD and ICP OES and changes in polyphenols, macro- and microelements were monitored using simulated human digestion. The pulp and seeds were characterized by flavanols, and the peels were high in phenolic acids. After the digestion, the highest bioaccessibility was found for quercetin (85%), while anthocyanins diglucosides were more bioaccessible in the gastric phase (153% and 113% for malvidin and cyanidin, respectively). This study examines the usefulness of ferrosilicon as a candidate feedstock material for wire-based 3D printers designed for in-space manufacturing. Alloys of composition ranging from pure iron to 12 wt% Si were synthesized and their electrical and mechanical properties characterized. The melts were cast into rods for mechanical testing to determine ultimate strength and ductility. It was determined that the samples above 3 wt% Si were too brittle to be pulled into wire and ruptured at low strain values. ConclusionThis novel service met all criteria of safety and was effective in reducing frequency of seizures. Patients preferred it to conventional services. It should be transferable to other LMICs.
