Tracheal rupture as a result of coughing

Tracheal rupture is a rare injury that can result in life-threatening complications. It is mostly caused by trauma or iatrogenic reasons such as endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy, neck and chest surgeries. Spontaneous tracheal rupture is seen more rarely and all the spontaneous tracheal ruptures defined in literature include posterior membranous wall which is the weakest portion of the trachea [1-8]. Based on our knowledge, our case of anterolateral spontaneous tracheal rupture as a result of coughing is the first case reported.
