Calculated Estimates of Plasma Volume in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure – Comparison to Measured Volumes

Volume overload with clinical congestion remains a prominent issue in the management of patients with chronic heart failure (HF) and has significant prognostic implications.1,2 While direct quantification of plasma volume (PV) has been shown to have clinical utility to reveal the often unrecognized marked heterogeneity and relative severities in volume overload of patients with chronic HF,3-6 this methodology has not always been readily available to clinicians. Therefore, multiple surrogates have been advanced and utilized to provide an assessment of intravascular volume status.
