Community-based Outreach and Treatment for Underserved Older Adults with Clinically Significant Worry: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Clinically significant worry is the key feature of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), one of the most common anxiety disorders among older adults.1,2 Even in the absence of a GAD diagnosis , however, clinically significant worry is frequently unrecognized and untreated among older adults,3 despite high prevalence (16% to 30%)4 and significant negative health outcomes, including increased cognitive difficulties and coexistent medical symptoms.5 6,7 Racial and ethnic minorities, many of whom live in underserved, low-income communities, are at particularly high risk for inadequate recognition and treatment of mental health needs8,9 due to barriers including limited workforce,10 options for care,11 and discrimination.
