Stowers breakthrough could make stem cells available where bone marrow matches aren't
A new discovery by the Stowers Institute of Medical Research could make more resources available to patients who might not have a bone marrow transplant match available.
In cases where a patient with leukemia or a blood disorder doesn't have a bone marrow match, blood-forming adult stem cells from the umbilical cord can be transplanted. Just 30 percent of patients have a donor match in their family.
