Analysis of the vascular access pathway for patients with chronic renal failure preparing for dialysis in a tertiary UK centre

Aim: The Renal Association best practice guidelines state that 60% of all incident patients with established end stage renal disease (ESRD) commencing planed haemodialysis (HD) should receive dialysis via a functioning arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or graft (AVG) and 80% of all prevalent long term dialysis patients should receive dialysis treatment via definitive access: AVF or AVG or Tenckhoff catheter. We aimed to review our practice against this recommendation and assess the pathway from diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to haemodialysis in these patients.
