Precise optical diagnosis of colorectal polyps could improve the cost-effectiveness of colonoscopy and reduce polypectomy-related complications. However, it is difficult for community-based non-experts to obtain sufficient diagnostic performance. Artificial intelligence-based systems have been developed to analyze endoscopic images; they identify neoplasms with high accuracy and low interobserver variation. We performed a multi-center study to determine the diagnostic accuracy of EndoBRAIN, an artificial intelligence-based system that analyzes cell nuclei, crypt structure, and microvessels in endoscopic images, in identifi...

ConclusionCollage mode might allow for a quick review of CCE videos with a high polyp detection rate for experienced CCE readers. Future prospective studies should include CCE collage mode for rapid polyp detection to further prove the feasibility of practical colon polyp detection by CCE and possibly support the role of CCE as a screening tool in CRC prevention.

SATB2 is a sensitive immunohistochemistry marker of colorectal carcinoma and non-neoplastic colorectal epithelium that is complementary to CDX2. However, its expression is affected by molecular alterations. Inflammatory bowel disease–associated neoplasia demonstrates molecular alterations that are different from those in sporadic colorectal neoplasia. Given these differences, we examined SATB2 expression in 73 cases of inflammatory bowel disease–associated neoplasia including 37 dysplasia cases and 36 carcinomas and compared the expression patterns with 50 cases of nondysplastic colorectal mucosa in patients wi...

Authors: Lund M, Erichsen R, Njor SH, Laurberg S, Valori R, Andersen B Abstract Objective: Cecal intubation rate (CIR) is known to be inversely associated with interval colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. Cecal intubation may be achieved by the use of force and sedation jeopardizing patient safety. The Performance Indicator of Colonic Intubation (PICI) is defined as the proportion of colonoscopies achieving cecal intubation with use of ≤2 mg midazolam and no-mild patient-experienced discomfort. We aimed (i) to measure the variation of PICI between colonoscopists and colonoscopy units; (ii) to assess the correla...

CONCLUSIONS.—: Poor prognostic factors for malignant polyps include high tumor grade, presence of lymphovascular invasion, tumor less than 1 mm from resection margin, submucosal invasion deeper than 1 mm, and high tumor budding. These features should be assessed by the pathologist and communicated to the clinical team in order to allow proper management. PMID: 31509454 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Wendy HsiaoAbstractThe incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is alarming among younger peoples. While no effective chemopreventive drug available in the market, researchers have been searching for alternative strategies against CRC that are in demand. Therefore, we tested the cancer-preventive properties of Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi) polysaccharides (GLP), along with the saponins extracted from Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GpS)...

ConclusionOsseous metaplasia is rarely detected in the gastrointestinal tract with most cases reported in malignant lesions and only a few in benign polyps. It is also important to raise awareness of this clinical mimic of sarcoma for clinicians and pathologists to properly diagnose and treat such cases.
