Cancer risk according to severity of alopecia areata: A population-based cohort study

The relationship between alopecia areata (AA) and cancer has not yet been established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of AA with cancer using national statistics. We analyzed the association using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service between the years 2007 and 2014. We enrolled all patients with AA, and age- and sex-matched control subjects at a ratio of 5:1. In subjects with AA (n = 668,604), overall cancer risk was higher than for control subjects without alopecia after adjusting for age, gender, income level, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia (HR 1.046, 95% CI 1.026-1.067).
