Skin cancer in transplant patients: Protection by skin of color

Background: Organ transplant recipients experience increased skin cancer rates secondary to their immunosuppressive regimens. These impacts on skin cancer rates occur within individual patient risk-profiles, which include factors such as skin tone. We sought to compare the rates of skin cancer development in a cohort of Caucasian and non-Caucasian liver and lung transplant recipients to better elucidate the protective effect of darker skin tone on post-transplantation skin cancer development.
