The use of intralesional measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in the treatment of recalcitrant viral warts

Introduction: Viral warts are common skin lesions caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. The superficial epidermis is infected with HPV, causing keratinocyte proliferation and hyperkeratosis. Although benign, they may be tender and cosmetically bothersome. In some cases, warts are recalcitrant to conventional therapies including topical agents, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, and laser ablation. The use of intralesional injections of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine represents a novel immunologic modality of treatment for recalcitrant warts and will prove particularly useful for patients who are less suitable for surgery or who have failed first-line standard therapy.
