Noninvasive neuromodulation for rehabilitation of sensorimotor function and reduction of chronic pain

ConclusionFurther efforts are warranted to adapt neuromodulation/neurostimulation protocols per patient owing to neuroplastic changes that favor vs. hinder improvement of function. A sole solution for all cases is not suggested. An individualized approach relying on biomarkers and clinical outcomes should ease the implementation in clinical practice of noninvasive neuromodulation as an innovative therapeutic option to speed-up recovery towards gains beyond those already reached, thus to further improve the quality of life.

This study was aimed to estimate the prevalence of chronic pain in different regions of China. Data on pain and its treatment were collected from 9357 participants using questionnaires and telephone-based interviews, from 31 regions of China. Gathered data were then coded into electronic data acquisition system and descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed. Out of 9298 participants, the ratio of chronic pain was 31.54% with the proportion of male having chronic pain (33.86%) was higher than that of female (29.53%). The average age of participants with pain (45.02 ± 15.07 years) was higher than f...

CONCLUSIONS: Elevated levels of sdLDL-C were associated with a higher prevalence of AIS, especially in non-cardioembolic stroke subtypes. After adjustment for other risk factors, sdLDL-C was found to be an independent risk factor for AIS. Also, sdLDL-C level was strongly associated with AIS severity and poor functional outcomes. Logistic regression models for AIS risk and prognosis prediction were established to help clinicians provide better prevention for high-risk subjects and monitor their prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the outcomes of MT for patients with PCO were poorer than with ACO. On the other hand, MT appears to have lower rates of sICH and to increase successful recanalization. Given the high recanalization rate, MT may serve as an adjunct to standard treatment. The key point to improve outcomes is recognizing reliable factors associated with futile recanalization and optimizing the results of MT. But in view of the different characteristics of posterior circulation stroke and anterior circulation stroke, the results are far from robust. PMID: 32062629 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsDespite published reports showing benefit for pain control in patients with BPA, the overall low quality, retrospective evidence included in this review highlights the need for a rigorous prospective study to further address this indication.

Authors: Jiang Q, Wang Z, Guo J, Yu T, Zhang X, Hu S Abstract Objectives: We investigated whether the totally video-assisted thoracoscopic mitral valve surgery provides superior clinical outcomes and less inflammatory injury reaction compared with conventional sternotomy. Methods: A total of 504 consecutive patients admitted for mitral valve surgery from May 2014 through May 2019 in a single center were retrospectively analyzed according to two distinct procedure approach: the totally video-assisted thoracoscopic approach (group A, n = 127) and standard median sternotomy (group B, n = 377...
