The separation of benign from malignant mesothelial proliferations is crucial to patient care, and subtyping of malignant mesotheliomas is important for selection of treatment options and estimating prognosis. These issues can present problems using routine morphology, and a variety of (sometimes controversial) markers have been proposed as aids.
