Outbreak of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium clone ST796, Switzerland, December 2017 to April 2018. Of 89 cases identified as carriers, 77 (86.5%) VRE isolates were virtually indistinguishable using whole genome sequencing, and identified as multilocus sequence type (MLST) ST796. This clone, previously only described in Australia and New Zealand, is characterised by rapid spread and the ability to cause bloodstream infections. ConclusionsWGS proved to be an effective tool to differentiate several LREfm clusters in an outbreak. Active screening for LREfm is important in a high-risk setting such as hematooncology, where multiple introductions are possible and occur despite intensified infection control measures.

In this study, we used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to investigate the relatedness of 183 VREfm isolates collected from 156 patients. Sequence types (ST) 17, ST80 and ST117 were the most predominant clones. Based on epidemiological data, 10 outbreaks were identified, which were caused by at least 13 distinct genotypes. The majority of isolates involved in outbreaks (91%) differed by only 0 to 3 SNPs. Four outbreaks involved more than one genotype and half of the cases considered as sporadic were possibly linked to an outbreak. In this study, radiofrequency (RF) processing was evaluated for pasteurization of ground black pepper. Stability and homogeneity tests were done for both Salmonella spp. and E. faecium during moisture equilibration before RF heating to evaluate the inoculation method. Moisture content of samples were conditioned such that the final moisture content after RF heating reached the optimal storage moisture.
