New findings in congenital cytomegalovirus infection: The spectrum from asymptomatic to symptomatic infection

Inagaki et  al from the University of Mississippi Medical Center at Jackson performed a retrospective analysis of serial cross-sectional data during 4 years between 2000-2012 using the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID). They aimed to assess risk factors, geographical distribution, length of stay, and birth hospi tal charges for cases of symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV). Among 1349 cases of cCMV identified, investigators identified non-Hispanic black race, government-sponsored insurance, and birth in the American South and West as having significantly increased odds ratios (95% CIs ran ging from 1.37 to 2.83) for cCMV.
