We would like to thank Dr Robert Palmer on his insightful comments to enhance the information provided in our study.1 Dr Palmer brings up several points exploring the role of reduced bile acids in irritable bowel syndrome constipation. These include the potential role of passive diffusion of bile acids in the small intestine, preferential absorption of different bile acid moieties, and the potential effect of the microbiome via deconjugation on bile acids to affect absorption and secretion in the colon, thereby impacting the clinical presentation with constipation.
