Homeopathic Treatment of Insomnia and Symptom Clusters Related to Cerebral Chemotoxicity in Oncology.

CONCLUSION:  This selected protocol, derived from a physiopathological knowledge of the symptoms, seems to be well suited to the prevention and treatment of post-chemotherapeutic cerebral inflammation. It is essential to start the homeopathic treatment before the chemotherapy session to anticipate the emergence of the 'chemo-brain' side effects. This proposed prevention protocol must be confirmed and quantified by randomised studies. PMID: 30021236 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

What is Clonidine? Originally developed as a nasal decongestant, Clonidine has been found to work very well for patients experiencing withdrawal symptoms from opiates. According to the JamaNetwork, Clonidine produces a rapid and statistically significant decrease in opiate withdrawal signs and symptoms. Clonidine administration for 14 days enabled all patients to be successfully detoxified from chronic opiate administration. In all patients studied, clonidine was a safe and effective non-opiate treatment of opiate withdrawal that suppressed the effect, signs, and symptoms of opiate withdrawal. Withdrawal Symptoms When some...

CONCLUSIONS: The results for the outcomes assessed in this review are uncertain and no firm conclusions regarding the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in IBD can be drawn. Future studies should employ RCT designs, with a longer follow-up and develop solutions to address attrition. Inclusion of objective markers of disease activity is strongly recommended as is testing antidepressants from different classes, as at present it is unclear if any antidepressant (or class thereof) has differential efficacy. This study aims to validate an ambulatory circadian monitoring (ACM) device for the detection of sleep and wake states and apply it to the evaluation of sleep quality in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). A polysomnographic validation study was conducted on a group of patients with different sleep disorders in a preliminary phase, followed by a pilot study to apply this methodology to PD patients. The ACM device makes it possible to estimate the main sleep parameters very accurately, as demonstrated by: (a) the lack of significant differences between the mean values detected by PSG and ACM in time in bed (TIB), total sl...

This study indicated that switch from H2 blockers to PPIs reduced delirium and, thus, providing an appropriate strategy to combat drug-induced delirium using antiulcer drugs (Fujii et al., 2012). The ventrolateral preoptic nucleus is a sleep-promoting nucleus located in the basal forebrain. A commonly used intravenous anesthetic, propofol, had been reported to induce sleep and augment the firing rate of neurons in ventrolateral GABAergic preoptic nucleus, but the underlining mechanism is yet to be clearly determined. Interestingly, the propofol-induced inhibition of inhibitory postsynaptic currents on noradrenalin-inhibite...

Abstract Neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPAEs) observed with the integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) dolutegravir (DTG) are usually mild to moderate. The most prevalent symptoms are insomnia and sleep disorders, but the spectrum also includes dizziness, anxiety, depression, headache, paraesthesia, muscle-skeletal pain, poor concentration, and slow thinking. In recent cohort studies involving>6400 patients in different countries, discontinuation rates due to NPAEs were observed in around 3.5% (range, 1.4-7.2%) of subjects treated with DTG. These rates have been higher than those seen in randomized clin...

Treating chronic low back pain (CLBP) with spine-focused interventions is common, potentially dangerous, and often ineffective. We posit that CLBP in older adults is a geriatric syndrome – a final common pathway for the expression of multiple contributors. We have published evidence and expert consensus-based algorithms to guide evaluation and treatment of key biopsychosocial CLBP contributors in older adults – hip osteoarthritis, myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, sacroiliac joint syndrome, lumbar spinal stenosis, leg length inequality, lateral hip/thigh pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and maladaptive coping....

Abstract Consumer demand for cannabidiol (CBD) oil has increased, with growing sales from dispensaries because of the alleged medicinal benefits. Although studies examining the specific therapeutic effects of CBD are increasing, clinical data do not support the popular uses of CBD for Parkinson disease, schizophrenia, cancer palliation and treatment, chronic pain and spasticity, depression, anxiety disorder, insomnia, and inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of insomnia in our health area is similar to those described in population based studies. The presence of some prejudicial habits for sleep quality as well as comorbidities could facilitate insomnia to become a chronic illness. Then, management of insomnia should be considered in a patient more general context. Pharmacological treatment is still in the first line and effective non pharmacological treatment is still a rare option. PMID: 30857912 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An increasingly important concern for clinicians who care for patients with cancers is their psychological problems and quality of life. The present study examined the efficacy of supportive group psychotherapy (SGP) on anxiety, depression and overall quality of life in patients with lung cancer undergoing gamma knife surgery (GKS). 160 patients with lung cancer undergoing GKS were randomly divided into SGP group (n = 82) and care as usual (CAU) group (n = 78). Patients in SGP group received 90 minutes’ group psychotherapy intervention once a week for 8 weeks, while patients in CAU group received usual care....
