LRP5 gene polymorphisms and radiographic joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis patients

ConclusionSignificant associations between LRP5 SNPs (p.A1330V, p.N740N, and p.V667M) and the severity of radiographic damage reinforce the evidence of bone destruction heritability in RA.

Comorbidity and health care utilisation in persons with Sjögren's syndrome: a claims data analysis. Clin Exp Rheumatol. 2020 Sep 18; Authors: Albrecht K, Dörner T, Redeker I, Karberg K, Marschall U, Zink A, Callhoff J Abstract OBJECTIVES: To capture comorbidity and medication of persons with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in a population-based cohort in comparison to matched controls. METHODS: Individuals with an outpatient diagnosis of M35.0 (ICD-10) in ≥2 quarters of a year or an inpatient diagnosis of M35.0 were identified in a German statutory health insurance fund covering 7.2 milli...

The objective of this study was to examine the proportion of BMD testing in men initiating ADT in Quebec and to identify factors associated with receipt of this testing. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of men extracted from Quebec public healthcare insurance administrative databases who initiated continuous ADT from 2000 to 2015 for>12 months. The primary study outcome was receipt of BMD testing in the period from 6 months before through 12 months after ADT initiation. Multivariable generalized linear mixed regression modeling with a logit link was performed to identify variables associated with BMD testing. ...

Exogenous glucocorticoids are widely used in the clinic for the treatment of inflammatory disorders and hematological cancers. Unfortunately, their use is associated with debilitating side effects, including hyperglycemia, osteoporosis, mood swings, and weight gain. Despite the continued efforts of pharma as well as academia, the search for so-called selective glucocorticoid receptor modulators (SEGRMs), compounds with strong anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties but a reduced number or level of side effects, has had limited success so far. Although monoclonal antibody therapies have been successfully introduced for ...

ConclusionsThe incidence of latent LPT was not high (2.4%) but incomplete AFFs developed in two RA patients. Higher-dose PSL because of a comorbid disease requiring glucocorticoid treatment other than RA or refractory RA were risk factors for LPT; X-ray screening for latent LPT would usefully prevent complete AFFs.

Bisphosphonates are drugs indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis, bone tumors, and bone metastases. However, these patients may eventually develop necrosis of jaw bones recognized as medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Treatment of this complication could be a challenge. The main triggering factor is a dental extraction. A 72-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis and using alendronate for several years underwent dental extraction 7 years ago. However, the socket did not heal.

Objective: To compare reoperation risk after total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) for intra-articular distal humerus fractures in elderly patients. Design: Retrospective comparative. Setting: Five percent Medicare Part B claims database. Patients: Patients older than 65 years of age with closed distal humerus fractures undergoing TEA or ORIF from 1996 to 2016. Intervention: TEA and ORIF. Main Outcome Measure: Reoperation risk based on multivariate Cox proportional hazards modeling. Results: A total of 142 TEA and 522 ORIF cases were identified. TEA patients had a gr...

ConclusionsHaving had a previous fracture or an inflammatory rheumatic disease increased the probability of treatment with AOD. However, the proportions starting AOD were much lower than clinically indicated.

ABSTRACTHip fractures are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in smokers with lung disease, but whether lung ‐specific factors are associated with fracture risk is unknown. Our goal was to determine whether lung‐specific factors associate with incident hip fracture and improve risk discrimination of traditional fracture risk models in smokers. The analysis consisted of a convenience sample of 9187 curr ent and former smokers (58,477 participant follow‐up years) participating in the Genetic Epidemiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) longitudinal observational cohort study. Participant...
