Children's Hospital Colorado, Mayo Clinic announce congenital heart defect collaboration

(Children's Hospital Colorado) Mayo Clinic and Children's Colorado are collaborating to provide solutions for patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare and complex form of congenital heart disease in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. The collaboration includes collecting cord blood to be stored at Mayo Clinic. When heart surgery is performed, Children's Colorado surgeons will inject the baby's own stem cells back into the heart muscle to make it stronger.
