Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for the treatment of severe aplastic anemia patients with infection: a single-center retrospective study
Aplastic anemia (AA) is a bone marrow (BM) failure syndrome characterized by peripheral pancytopenia, BM hypocellularity and hematopoietic stem cell niche impairment.1, 2 Many complications, such as infection, haemorrhage, and severe anemia, are common factors leading to death. Bacterial and invasive fungal infections are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with AA.3-5 In fact, profound persistent neutropenia is the dominant risk factor for the development of infections in patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA).
