COMMENTARY Realizing the “Great Potential” of MCDA in HTA

We read with interest the insightful article by Marsh et al. [1], “The Use of MCDA in HTA: Great Potential, but More Effort Needed.” In the article, the authors describe three challenges to the use of multicriterion decision analysis (MCDA): the use of additive models, a lack of connection between criteria scales and weights, and the use of MCDA in economic ev aluation. The authors offer several suggestions for improving current methods including more careful consideration of criteria to avoid overlap and maintain independence, greater precision in the development of “ranges of consequences” and “weighting of criteria,” the consideration of opport unity cost in decision making, and an examination of the relationship between MCDA and economic analysis.
