De-implementation of care practices and interventions

Increasingly there is a focus on the study of how to best disseminate and implement innovative approaches to care in real world clinical settings. Less emphasis has been placed, however, on de-implementation or the elimination of entrenched and often costly or potentially hazardous approaches to care. What has been done has been mostly in the area of medical interventions such as aggressive screening for older adults (e.g., elimination of mammography and PAP tests for older women). There are, however, many interventions we do routinely in nursing that should be de-implemented based on nursing research or clinical experience.
