We Can Work (It) Out Together: Type 1 Diabetes Boot Camp for Adult Patients and Providers Improves Exercise Self-Efficacy

ConclusionsThese findings suggest that a 4-week education- and exercise-focused program improves DCPs' self-efficacy in providing exercise advice to patients.

Abstract The extract of Lycium bark (LBE), which is the root bark of Lycium chinense, has long been used in China for hypertension, inflammation, and diabetes. LBE has been reported to ameliorate hyperglycemia in mice with alloxan-induced type 1 diabetes, but evidence on the effect of LBE in diabetes had not been enough. Therefore, we investigated the effects of LBE on type 2 diabetes using db/db mice. Nine-week-old male db/db mice were orally administered LBE (425 mg/kg) for 10 weeks. Blood samples were collected under anesthesia for the determination of blood glucose and insulin levels. The blood glucose ...

We describe a unique, complex case of a man resulted affected by both APS-2 and MEN-2a. The patient developed Hashimoto's thyroiditis, diabetes mellitus type 1 and AAD, despite testing negative for adrenal cortex autoantibodies (ACA) and steroid 21-hydroxylase autoantibodies (21-OHAb). Moreover, he had also a family history for MEN-2a and he first developed medullay thyroid cancer, then bilateral pheochromocytoma on the adrenal substrate of an AAD. On adrenal histology we found complete bilateral cortical atrophy in the presence of a lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis, confirming an ACA and 21-OHAb-negative AAD. This da...

ConclusionsHHS/DKA occurred mostly in T1D and younger patients. However, both also occurred in T2D, which is of great importance in the treatment of diabetes. Better education programmes are necessary to prevent decompensation and comorbidities.

The number of diabetic patients in Europe and world-wide is growing. Diabetes confers a 2-fold higher risk for vascular disease. Lack of insulin production (Type 1 diabetes, T1D) or lack of insulin responsiveness (Type 2 diabetes, T2D) causes systemic metabolic changes such as hyperglycemia (HG) which contribute to the pathology of diabetes. Monocytes and macrophages are key innate immune cells that control inflammatory reactions associated with diabetic vascular complications. Inflammatory programming of macrophages is regulated and maintained by epigenetic mechanisms, in particular histone modifications. The aim of our s...
