Assessing the Levels of L-Carnitine and Total Antioxidant Capacity in Newly Diagnosed and Long-Standing Type II Diabetes

This study was done on 90 adult subjects, which included 30 newly diagnosed, 30 long-standing T2 diabetics, and 30 healthy controls. Plasma samples were used to assay the biochemical parameters.ResultsIn this study, both diabetic groups (newly diagnosed and long-standing T2 diabetics) were significantly different in baseline characteristics, such as age, height, weight, BMI, FBS, Chol, and TG, compared to the healthy controls. Plasma LC levels in newly diagnosed and long-standing T2 diabetic adult patients were significantly lower than healthy controls (P

Authors: Zhang C, Cai W, Zhao H, Zhu M, Cui J, Sun Z Abstract To compare the clinical efficacy of gastric bypass in obese patients with T2DM with different BMI. Serum leptin, adiponectin, triglyceride (TG), cholesterol (CHOL) were measured as the indicators to show clinical efficacy after laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery (LRYGB). For patients with high BMI and patients with low BMI, the therapeutic effect of LRYGB surgical diabetes is more significant. The postoperative remission rate of diabetes in the high BMI group was not correlated with the preoperative lipid metabolism index but was positively correlated w...

Authors: Upadhyay B, Dwivedi S, Wajid S, Jain SK Abstract Diabetes and tobacco use are two of the largest public health challenges of our time. We aim to investigate the association between the two by comparing biochemical profiles of diabetic tobacco users (TUs) and tobacco nonus-ers (TNUs) to provide insight into the joint effect of tobacco and diabetes on body systems. This case-controlled study included 265 subjects, aged 18-60 yr, from the suburban population of Delhi, India. With the help of a questionnaire, participants are interviewed regarding their history of tobacco use. Results show association of tobac...

Authors: Afrisham R, Paknejad M, Ilbeigi D, Sadegh-Nejadi S, Gorgani-Firuzjaee S, Vahidi M Abstract INTRODUCTION: Fetuin-A serves a dual function; its high levels are associated with metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and on the other hand, it serves as a potent inhibitor of vascular ectopic calcification. Because of the opposing findings, the aim of the current study was to investigate serum fetuin-A levels in military personnel males with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: In the case-control study, anthropometric and biochemical paramet...

AbstractPurposeRegarding the role of inflammation in progression of diabetes this study was conducted to investigate the association between inflammatory biomarkers such as nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with the chance of existence of diabetic retinopathy and its progression in patients with diabetes.MethodsA total of 83 patients with T2DM (Type 2 diabetes mellitus) were divided into three groups of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and patients without diabetic...

AbstractObjectivesTo assess the prevalence of statin usage, intensity of statin therapy, and serum LDL cholesterol levels achieved in clinical diabetes mellitus population to analyze whether the recommendations of American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association ’s cholesterol guidelines 2013 (ACC/AHA cholesterol guidelines 2013) are achieved in them.MethodsFasting lipid profile values, prevalence of statin usage, and intensity of statin therapy among 306 diabetes mellitus patients in the age group of 40 to 75  years, visiting the medicine department of a secondary care hospital, were noted. Results wer...

It is well established that diabetes is the major cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide. Both hyperglycemia, and more recently, advanced glycation endproducts, have been shown to play critical roles in the development of kidney disease. Moreover, the renin-angiotensin system along with growth factors and cytokines have also been shown to contribute to the onset and progression of diabetic kidney disease; however, the role of lipids in this context is poorly characterized. The current study aimed to compare the effect of 20 weeks of streptozotocin-induced diabetes or western diet feeding on kidney disease in two differe...

Conclusions Although clinical data supporting an influence of all these drugs on the course of the disease are limited, this is an interesting background for further research that might help unravel the complex mechanisms underlying the link between COVID-19 and diabetes.

AbstractBackgroundSerum lipids and glycemic dysregulation are the known characteristics of β- thalassemia major (β-TM). Here, we evaluated the association of these disorders with insulin resistance (IR), oxidative stress and serum ferritin values in patients with β-TM.MethodsThis case-control study was performed in thalassemia unite of Darab Hospital (Darab, Fars province, Iran) from December 2016 to December 2017. Forty-eight patients with β-TM and 33 healthy individuals were enrolled. Serum fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), l...

We report a case of ANCA-associated vasculitis coexisting with cholesterol emboli. A 76-year-old woman was diagnosed with ANCA-associated interstitial pneumonitis. She rapidly developed progressive glomerulonephritis, purpura, and peripheral sensory nerve disorder. A kidney biopsy revealed that renal dysfunction was caused by vasculitis of the interlobular arteries and cholesterol emboli. A skin biopsy revealed that purpura was caused by cholesterol emboli. Glucocorticoid and statin therapies were administered. Thereafter, the renal function and other symptoms improved and stabilized. The representative symptoms of ANCA-as...
