Abstract The extract of Lycium bark (LBE), which is the root bark of Lycium chinense, has long been used in China for hypertension, inflammation, and diabetes. LBE has been reported to ameliorate hyperglycemia in mice with alloxan-induced type 1 diabetes, but evidence on the effect of LBE in diabetes had not been enough. Therefore, we investigated the effects of LBE on type 2 diabetes using db/db mice. Nine-week-old male db/db mice were orally administered LBE (425 mg/kg) for 10 weeks. Blood samples were collected under anesthesia for the determination of blood glucose and insulin levels. The blood glucose ...

AbstractAge-related metabolic and renal changes predispose older people to an increased risk of diabetes mellitus and diabetic kidney disease, respectively. As the prevalence of the ageing population is increasing, because of increased life expectancy, the prevalence of older people with diabetic kidney disease is likely to increase. Diabetic kidney disease is associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes and increased costs to healthcare systems. The management includes promotion of a healthy lifestyle and control of cardiovascular risk factors such as hyperglycaemia, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Older people a...

Conclusion: This study suggests that plasma MR-proADM concentration is a more reliable indicator of VAT for fat distribution, and thus, MR-proADM may help better understand the obesity paradox. Changes in circulating levels of MR-proADM could possibly reflect changes in body composition, endocrine, and metabolic milieu.

AbstractCOVID-19 is a viral disease due to the infection of the novel Corona virus SARS-CoV-2, that has rapidly spread in many countries until the World Health Organization declared the pandemic from March 11, 2020. Elderly patients and those affected by hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions are more susceptible to present more severe forms of COVID-19. These conditions are often represented in dialytic renal end-stage patients. Moreover, dialysis patients are more vulnerable to infection due to suppression of the immune system. Growing evidences, although still supported by f...

AbstractPatients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have a higher burden of cardio-metabolic comorbidities like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease compared to the general population. Adipose tissue is thought to promote a chronic low grade inflammatory state through inflammatory mediators like tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), leptin, and adiponectin. A higher body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for development of PsA and affects disease activity and response to therapy including both disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and tumor necrosis factor inhibitors ...

We report a case of ANCA-associated vasculitis coexisting with cholesterol emboli. A 76-year-old woman was diagnosed with ANCA-associated interstitial pneumonitis. She rapidly developed progressive glomerulonephritis, purpura, and peripheral sensory nerve disorder. A kidney biopsy revealed that renal dysfunction was caused by vasculitis of the interlobular arteries and cholesterol emboli. A skin biopsy revealed that purpura was caused by cholesterol emboli. Glucocorticoid and statin therapies were administered. Thereafter, the renal function and other symptoms improved and stabilized. The representative symptoms of ANCA-as...
