A polysaccharide found in brown algae shows great anticancer potential

(Natural News) Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting men in the U.S. Although deemed survivable, it remains a considerable cause of death. A paper published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine discussed the anti-tumor properties of fucoidan, a bioactive polysaccharide derived from algae, and how it can...

Authors: Xia J, Kawamura Y, Suehiro T, Chen Y, Sato K Abstract Carbon dots prepared from different sources have been widely studied in various medical applications. Those dots have been reported to be able to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, such as prostate cancer cells. The current study used carbon dots prepared from red beans to determine their effect on 16 cell lines including liver cancer cells, pancreatic cancer cells, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma cells, and colorectal adenocarcinoma cells. In a cellular viability experiment, carbon dots were found suppress cancer cell viability in a time- and d...

parovská Tomáš Kašparovský Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring nonsteroidal phenolic plant compounds that, due to their molecular structure and size, resemble vertebrate steroids estrogens. This review is focused on plant flavonoids isoflavones, which are ranked among the most estrogenic compounds. The main dietary sources of isoflavones for humans are soybean and soybean products, which contain mainly daidzein and genistein. When they are consumed, they exert estrogenic and/or antiestrogenic effects. Isoflavones are considered chemoprotective and can be used as an alternative th...

ConclusionsMen with mCRPC harboring ATM mutations experienced inferior outcomes to PARP inhibitor therapy compared to those harboring BRCA1/2 mutations. Alternative therapies should be explored for patients with ATM mutations.Patient summaryMutations in BRCA1/2 and ATM genes are common in metastatic prostate cancer. In this study we compared outcomes for men with BRCA1/2 mutations to those for men with ATM mutations being treated with olaparib. We found that men with ATM mutations do not respond as well as men with BRCA1/2 mutations.

(Natural News) You may not hear about oral cancer as much as, say, breast, lung, liver, or prostate cancer, but it isn’t any less deadly. Even today, it’s still considered a dangerous type of cancer – one that is hard to treat. A study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine discusses how red...

Abstract Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have become the main cause of morbidity and death worldwide. In addition, current anti-diabetic and cardiovascular therapy is based on conventional drugs that have limited effectiveness and adverse side effects. In this regard, the role of medicinal herbs as a complementary or an alternative medicine is of great interest. Urtica dioica L. (Urticaceae), which is the focus of this review, has been widely used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including, diabetes, hypertension and prostate cancer. The aim of this article is...

In this study, we had integrated systems pharmacology and bioinformatics to explore the major active ingredients against cancer, targets for cancer treatment, and the related mechanisms of action. These targets were scrutinized using web-based Gene SeT Analysis Toolkit (WebGestalt), and 10 KEGG pathways were identified by enrichment analysis. Refined analysis of the KEGG pathways indicated that the anticancer effect of HJD showed a functional correlation with the p53 signaling pathway; moreover, HJD had potential therapeutic effect on prostate cancer (PCa) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Afterwards, genetic alterations ...

ConclusionUrolithins might contribute to chemopreventive activity of ellagitannin rich preparations. Our results support use of ellagitannin rich preparations in prostate cancer chemoprevention, but advise caution in their potential use in complementary therapy of prostate cancer. The differences in activity profiles of urolithins indicate that possible health benefits and interactions will depend on the type of produced ellagitannins metabolite.Graphical abstract
